“Let food be thy medicine, let medicine be thy food”
The latter part of Hippocrates’ famous quote really puts into perspective just what “Superfoods” are. Superfoods are naturally occurring in nature and are capable of fighting off diseases (such as heart disease and cancer), bacteria, infections, repairing cells, boosting the immune system, making us feel happy (naturally) and a host of other qualities all without the side effects of prescription drugs.
This month’s feature is one of my favorites: Cacao! (or Chocolate, however quite different from what we think of as chocolate these days)
All that great stuff you hear about Chocolate and more specifically “Dark” chocolate doesn’t come from a Hershey Bar or even a Hershey Special Dark. It comes from Cacao. Cacao is the seed (bean or nut) found inside a large fruit that grows on trees. Because it is a Superfood, Cacao performs all of the functions listed above. This “Chocolate” has absolutely no sugar, dairy or emulsifiers in it and is one of the highest natural sources of these nutrients: Antioxidants, Fiber, Protein, Magnesium, Iron, Chromium, Manganese, Zinc, Copper, Vitamin C, Tryptophan, Serotonin, Phenylethylamine and Anandmide. The last four of those being amazingly powerful compounds that cause us to feel happy. Many of these nutrients listed above are heat sensitive and are not found in commercial or processed chocolates. They can ONLY be found in RAW Cacao.
top 3 reasons to try raw cacao:
· Helps with weight loss due to high fiber and nutrients
· Theobromine, a chemical contained in Cacao, dilates the blood vessels allowing for more efficient blood flow and less work for the heart
· Nutrients in Cacao work with the body to produce mood altering effects like happiness and help keep us alert and focused.
I can’t think of a better reason to try some Cacao. Well I can because it does more than just mentioned here but this was a good start. I think I’ll go blend something up now…
