Vacation and What to Do Afterwards

Have you ever gone on vacation and spent the whole time enjoying a more than comfortable amount of food and beverage?  We just did!   While feeling maybe a little guilty about your choices, you tell yourself it’s only a week and you’ll get back on track when you get home.  Many of us go for the comfort food when we’re on vacation; after all, we’re ON VACATION.  It makes it even easier when you don’t have to look for temptation rather it always finds you.  Every meal you find this temptation and being on a break is the only reason you need to go for it.

What is it about all that food that makes it so tempting?

Here’s one answer – The pastries, cookies, cured meats and saucy, cheese covered foodstuffs are all able to trigger chemicals in our brains that make them seemingly irresistible.   Does this sound crazy?  Of course it does!  Some of these items are even chemically and scientifically engineered to have this effect on us.

In nature, according to Ayurvedic Medicine, we can find 6 different flavors; Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter, Astringent and Pungent.  All six help to balance each other yet due to refining and processing you will not typically find the latter three in the Western diet. Those first three do exist in the Western Diet however have been so highly concentrated by processing that we are left with no choice but to crave more.  If the body wants sweet, nature gave us fruits and root vegetables like corn, beets and carrots.  We never imagined that the sugar could be extracted from the beets while disregarding all the really important components.  It is then brought to such a point of concentration that it causes new chemical reactions inside our bodies which lead to much of what we see in the U.S. now as common illnesses.

What’s the good news in all of this?   You were only on vacation for a week.  If you were feeling a bit off track when you got back, it’s not too late.  This is the time to take control of your health.  Use this as a reason and your motivation to recharge and start fresh.    We all need vacations and as much as we love being on them, there’s nothing better than coming off them and turning over some new leaves.
