“It is said that “One good decision leads to another.” It wasn’t until I began my sessions with Mike that I began to understand the truth of this mantra. With guidance, Mike has inspired me to make little changes in my daily routine that have made big changes in my overall health and wellbeing. Like so many women, I have struggled with weight. As a mother of three young children, my health took a backseat. Every now and then I’d attempt to follow the exercise and crash diets that I read about in Self and Women’s Day magazines. Those moments of motivation and commitment to better myself were fleeting.  The diets I read about were just not a practical way to live. So, in an attempt to keep my weight in check I took stock in diet soda and artificial sweeteners. To be completely honest, I became addicted. After a workout, I would crack open a can of soda and dine on Lean Cuisine. To reward myself for a day of low calorie intake, I’d binge on Oreos and milk once the kids were in bed. When I had my first session with Mike, I was not at all interested in changing my habits. I LOVED my nightly routine and was at a point in my life where I accepted my body for what it was. It was in conversation that he mentioned the effects of artificial sweeteners and how addictive they could be. So, I challenged myself. I began by limiting my diet soda intake from two a day, to just one. Well,  that wasn’t so bad. I began drinking seltzer with a splash of cranberry juice as an alternative. Soon I took it a step further and challenged myself to diet soda on the weekends. In a few months, I would order one a week when out to dinner, and would take a few sips only to find that I  really didn’t need or want it like I had just weeks ago.

The decision to limit my soda intake lead me to other life changing “swapportunities”. I began swapping my artificial sweeteners with natural ones. Instead of using 2 Splenda in my tea, I became used to sugar in the raw, honey or agave nectar. For my kids (quite possibly the pickiest eaters on earth),  I purchased only snacks with natural sweeteners and flavors. It turns out there are lots of affordable choices out there. I started using the peanut butter with one ingredient- PEANUTS. They never knew the difference. And instead of a daily juice box, I  just stopped having juice in the house. Now they drink water. They have never complained about the changes and are beginning to understand how to make healthy choices.

It’s been two years since my diet soda challenge.  I have lost inches and am at the lowest weight I’ve been….even pre-kids. Losing weight was never my goal. However, it was an added incentive.  I have more energy, less headaches, less bloating (sorry, but we’re being honest right?) and I feel great! My kids are on a healthier track and are learning valuable, lifelong lessons about healthy eating.

You may not be willing to change certain things about your diet. I certainly wasn’t. But as I began to make smarter choices about my food intake, I found myself looking for more ways to improve. And I’m far from finished. Two years in, Mike continues to share helpful suggestions on how to improve my health. He has inspired me to live well. “Last October I saw my doctor for a check-up, including a blood test.  The results showed that my cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL were too high, and my HDL was too low.  On top of that, I was Vit D deficient, and my blood glucose was too high.  I felt tired, out of shape, stressed, and overwhelmed at having to change this all on my own.  My doctor gave me great direction, but I felt that if I was to truly succeed, I needed a guide, who had done the research on how to resolve these issues.
